8570 in a nutshell is IT Competency Training, Certification and Management Training for individuals who conduct Information Assurance functions in roles supporting the DoD. These individuals are required to hold an approved certification to perform their job responsibilities. Job responsibilities include maintaining computer and network functionality and securing information resources. Training at varying levels is for technicians and managers.

8570 training is a government mandate that applies to any military service individual, contractor and/or any individual that has privileged access to a DoD information system performing Information Assurance functions.

Furthermore, the DoD Directive 8570 requires that all individuals performing IAT and IAM functions must be certified by the end of 2010 and all performing CND-SP and IASEA roles certified by the end of 2011.
