A busload of campers stopped at a dairy stand for ice cream. They ordered 107 cones, some soft serve at $2.00 each and the rest hard packed at $0.50 each. The total bill was 100 and 2550. How many of each type of cone were ordered? So in a story problem, there are five steps. The first step is to define the variables. So let's let X equal the amount of soft serve and Y equal the amount of hard pack. The second step is to set up your equations. The total amount of cones ordered was 107, so X + y equal 107. The soft served cost $2.00 each or 2 * X plus the hard pack cost $0.50 each, .5 Y equal the total bill, 100 and 2550. The money plus the money had to equal the money. So now to do the elimination process, if we want to get additive inverses on the X, we're going to multiply that top equation through by -2. So looking at these axes, if I multiply the top equation through by -2 I get -2 X and positive 2X so that when I add those two equations we get -1.50 Y equaling -88.5 or Y equal 59. When we go back and we do the additive inverses for the YSI see that I need to have it be a negative .5 in order to get the additive inverses. Once we do that, we get when we combine the equations 1.5 X equaling 72 so X equal 48. So the first step was to find the variable. The second step was set up the equations. The third step is to solve them. So X equal 48 and Y equal 59. The 4th step is to check 48 + 59 is 107 2 * 48 + .5 * 59 equal 125.50. We must check in both equations. Just because it's true in one doesn't automatically mean it will be true in the other. The 5th step is to answer what was asked for. The original problem says how many of each type of cones were ordered. So there were 38 soft serve cones and 59 hard pack cones served.
