When graphing the two equations, we want to solve for Y. So Y equal negative X + 9 and negative Y equal negative X + 7, divide through by -1 Y equal X -, 7. So to graph the first line, we're going to go up nine and down one to the right one, down one to the right one, down one to the right one. Draw on the line to graph the second one. We're going to go to -7 We're going to go up one and over one because the coefficient on the X is +1. When I graph that line, then I'm asked to actually look at the graph to figure out the point of intersection. These two points intersect AT-81 because there's an intersection. By definition, the word consistent means at least one solution. So consistent meant that there was at least one solution, and there is. It's at 81. The equations are independent because just because I know one line doesn't mean I necessarily know exactly where the other one is. Conceptually, what it means is there's a bunch of lines that go through that point. So just because I know one equation of one line that goes through the point, I don't absolutely know where the other line is, hence independent of each other.
