Find an equation of the line containing the given pair of
points.
Express your answer in the form X equal AY equal B or Y equal,
MX plus B, 2.5, eight and five and 5/10, 10.
So what is the equation of the line and slope in our sub form?
The first thing we're going to do when we have two points is
find the slope.
So we're going to do the change of YS divided by the change of
XS.
Remember the Y is the second number in an ordered pair.
The X is the first number and they have to come in from the
same ordered pair.
So if we look, if I start with the 10, I need to have the X
that goes with the Y value of 10 coming first.
So 10 -, 8 / 5.5 or 5 5/10 -, 2 5/10 that's 2/3.
So now I'm going to put it into point slope form y -, 8 equal
2/3 times the quantity X -, 2/5.
I'm going to distribute the 2/3 X I'm also going to change that
2.5 into 5 halves.
Remember that 2.5 is really 2 1/2, and to get it into an
improper fraction, we're going to multiply the denominator by
the whole number and add the numerator to it.
So 2 * 2 + 1 / 2.
So we're going to get 5 halves.
So 2/3 times the -5 halves.
When I distribute, the twos will cancel, leaving me -5 thirds.
I'm going to take the -8 from the left side and add it to the
right +8.
That eight is understood to be over A1, and if I want to
combine it with five thirds, I need to get a three in the
denominator.
So we're going to multiply the top and the bottom each by
three, and we're going to get 8 is the same thing as 24 thirds.
So -4 negative 5 thirds plus 24 thirds is 19 thirds, and we had
the 2/3 X.
We can't combine those because one has an X and one doesn't.
Hence they're not like terms.
Our answer should be Y equal 2 thirds X + 19 thirds.
