Welcome to the training for the Battelle
Developmental Inventory, Second Edition. The
BDI-2 has a reputation of being the gold
standard in assessment of early childhood
development.
The BDI was developed over an 11 year span
with the original publication in 1984. The
second edition, which we are using today, was
published in 2005.
The BDI-2 is a comprehensive measure of all
developmental areas – adaptive, personal-
social, communication, motor and cognitive.
Each book is color coded for ease of
administration.
It is a fun and easy test to administer as there
are many manipulatives that the children enjoy.
It has flexible administration options –
Structured, where you will actually present the
item to the child, Observation, where you
determine the child’s ability by what you have
observed in your daily experiences with the
child and Interview, where you interview the
child’s caregiver. Each item has a multiple
point scoring which allows you to know if the
skill is mastered, emerging or absent. This
will help in identifying learning objectives.
Each item has scoring instructions specific for
that item. These are clearly described in the
domain books.
The BDI-2 is based on the concept of
developmental milestones of typically
developing children. In each subdomain the
skills progress in order of development. It is
estimated that 75-90% of human development
occurs during the birth to 5 year period. The
BDI-2 can be administered to children from
birth to 7 years 11 months. The BDI-2
assesses the whole child in 5 domains and
13 subdomains. It can be used as a
screening tool or comprehensive assessment.
The BDI-2 has many uses including:
Identification of strengths and developmental
needs; Identification of specific domain delays;
Program eligibility for ESE services;
Developmental Screener for Preschool
children; Development of Individual Education
Plans and Individual Family Support Plans;
Monitoring student progress on a short and
long term basis; and Program evaluation and
Accountability.
Volusia County is using the BDI-2 for PreK
eligibility in addition to program evaluation and
accountability. Any child receiving PreK ESE
services must be given the BDI-2 battery
and/or screener upon entrance and exit from
the program. You as the teacher can use the
results in determining goals and objectives for
the child.
The BDI-2 full battery and screener cover 5
comprehensive domains: Adaptive, Personal
Social, Communication, Motor and Cognitive.
The same 5 domains are covered in the
Screening Test, Item Test Book. Each domain
is in a separate book to facilitate flexible
administration. You can begin testing in any
domain book, but it is suggested that within
each domain you begin with the first
subdomain.
The BDI-2 is a highly reliable instrument. As
you can see it meets or exceeds industry
standards.
Validity of an instrument is determined by its
uses and interpretations. Desired indicators
of validity (content, criterion and construct) are
provided with the BDI-2. Always consider all
relevant information along with quantitative and
qualitative data from the BDI-2 when making
decisions for children.
Some of the children that we test may need
some accommodations. Please consult
Chapter 2 in the manual for guidance in this
area. Accommodations are provided for motor,
hearing, vision, speech impairments,
emotional behavioral disturbances and
multiple disabilities. When providing an
accommodation, be sure that you do NOT
provide one that changes the nature of the test
item. In other words, if an accommodation
needs to be made for the child, make sure you
are testing the construct described in the
domain test booklet for the item being
assessed. In addition, please be mindful of
the child’s culture and background. The BDI-2
is also available in a Spanish version.
